While you might be thinking of dentures as one type fits all, many different types of dentures are available today. We can offer our dental patients many options for partial or complete mouth teeth replacement, thanks to dental technology.
Which Denture Is Right For You?
At Riverside Dental, our dentists specialize in finding the best options for treating your dental needs. For some, this means that fillings or a crown could repair their broken tooth. For others, they have several missing teeth, and dentures may be a solution for them. If you need a denture, four different options may be suggested: partial dentures, traditional dentures, implant-fixed dentures, and implant-supported removable dentures.
1. Partial Dentures – Partial dentures are an excellent choice when you still have many healthy teeth
remaining. The partial replaces teeth that are missing and can be removed for easier dental
cleaning. This is generally the least expensive investment when it comes to dentures.
2. Traditional Dentures – Traditional dentures are used when all teeth in an arch need replacing. This
type of denture is the least expensive investment when it comes to the replacement of all teeth but
it should also be noted that it does have some drawbacks, such as possible gum irritation and often
needing to use a denture adhesive to keep them in place.
3. Implant Dentures – Implant dentures can be fixed or removable. While implant dentures are a bigger
investment than other denture options, they have many benefits. Some of those benefits are that
they last much longer and help prevent bone loss in the jaw. They also offer a better fit for most
people, which usually means less irritation on the gum tissue. These dentures attach to implants
rather than rest on your gum tissue.
How To Properly Clean Dentures
Dentures require proper cleaning and care to keep them looking and functioning their best. Traditional removable dentures make it a little easier to clean your dentures because they can be removed from the mouth, allowing you to access all denture angles. Here are some simple guidelines that can help you keep your removable dentures clean and looking like new:
- Remove dentures after eating and rinse with water to remove food particles and debris.
- Handle them with care to avoid dropping or cracking dentures.
- Remove dentures to brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Soak your dentures overnight in a denture cleaner to keep them looking and smelling fresh.
- Avoid scrubbing your denture with abrasive things. Even toothpaste can be too abrasive for cleaning your denture and could scratch it.
- Visit your dentist at least once a year to examine your dentures for good fit and function.
Fixed or screwed-in dentures that are not removable should be cared for as you would natural teeth. You may need to use a floss threader to help around implants and under denture areas. Avoid whitening toothpaste as it can be too abrasive and scratch the acrylic areas of your denture.
When Dentures Could Be A Good Option For You
Dentures may not be a good option for everyone. Dentures may be a good option for you if you are missing all or several teeth in one arch, but many factors make sure that dentures will work in your situation and with your lifestyle.
We recommend that you meet with our dentist to determine if dentures are an option for you and, if so, which of these dentures best fits your needs. Contact us today to schedule your next dental appointment!
